9th August 1947 — The Eve of the Storm
Delhi’s Restless Streets
The lanes of Delhi echoed with anxiety as radio bulletins brought news of Partition. Crowds swelled at railway stations, clutching meagre belongings, hoping for a safer tomorrow.
Congress Committee in Heated Debate
At the All India Congress Committee meeting, Hindu-Muslim tensions ran high over the division of provinces and assets. Mahatma Gandhi, opposing Partition in his heart, spoke softly but painfully:
“When nations make decisions driven by hatred, love falls silent.”
Lahore’s Unshakable Enthusiasm
In Lahore, the air thundered with chants of “There is no god but Allah!”. Regal Chowk, Mall Road, and Anarkali were alive with flag-sellers, painters, and eager youths asking, “Have you offered your share of sacrifice?”.
Blood on the Tracks
Bengal and Bihar saw severe communal riots. Trains arriving in Lahore carried not passengers of hope, but scenes of horror — soaked in blood.
Jinnah’s Urgent Orders
An intelligence report warned Muhammad Ali Jinnah of increased threats to Muslims in Delhi. His orders were immediate — secure the caravans at any cost.
A Night of Silence
As darkness fell, Delhi grew unnervingly quiet — no prayers, no bells, only stillness. Some slept with dreams of freedom, others stayed awake, knowing tomorrow could bring the biggest decision of their lives.
